Twitter Update: Will Twitter Start Charging Tweeple For The Right To Tweet?
Twitter is rapidly approaching a solid method of monetizing their ever-increasing user base. Recent hoaxes about paid upgrades have been widely circulated, but all have been quickly uncovered and debunked.
Twitter Premium Accounts Under Development:
Twitter co-founder Biz Stone says the San Francisco start-up is watching the outside initiatives closely as it prepares to launch its own fee-based services this year, but doesn’t view them as competition. “We want to work with those companies that are already making an effort,” he says.
Mr. Stone says Twitter recently hired a product manager to oversee the development of commercial accounts. The accounts would offer users more features in exchange for a fee, but Mr. Stone says Twitter hasn’t set a launch date for them.
More details from The Wall Street Journal.
In a recent email to Business Insider, Stone confirmed the trick would be to find services that will “improve the experience.”
“Will it be account verification? Will it be lightweight analytics? Will there be opportunities for introducing customers to businesses on Twitter[?] So many questions. But the key is to understand that Twitter will remain free for all to use — individuals and companies alike,” he persisted.
Twitter has also started carefully testing unobtrusive text ads as another method of monetizing their highly interactive users. Recent figures from Nielsen pegged Twitter’s year-on-year growth at an astronomical 1,382%.
